PASSAGE TO READ ALOUD: "How can we communicate more effectively with non-native English speakers? Here are a few strategies that may help: Try to avoid phrases that do not have a literal meaning. English is full of colourful expressions like “PAR FOR THE COURSE” or “IT’S A LONGSHOT”. However, there’s no obvious logic to the meaning of these expressions. If the person you’re speaking to doesn’t know them, this can cause misunderstanding.  Try to keep sentences short. The recommended maximum is about 20 words. This allows the brain time to process language in manageable chunks. Pause. Native English speakers will often ask a question and not allow enough time for the listener to process the words, think about an answer, find the appropriate wording and then execute a grammatically correct sentence. Don’t be afraid to speak more slowly than usual. We need to aim for 150 words per minute. This passage should take you approximately 60 seconds."
